How thick does the mulch need to be on a playground?
Jelly Bean Rubber Mulch is tested to ASTM F1292-09 (the standard for critical fall height for head injuries). At 6 inches of compacted depth it exceeds the test parameters, which are set at 17 feet. Certain state regulations may require licensed childcare facilities to meet a specific depth — contact us for help determining the right amount. For most backyard sets, 3–4 inches is adequate.
How is it packaged?
Sold in 1-ton increments. Each ton is packed in a sack banded to a standard pallet.
What does 1 ton cover?
1 ton equals 2.26 cubic yards compacted. Coverage by depth:
- 3 inches — 222 sq. ft.
- 4 inches — 167 sq. ft.
- 5 inches — 133 sq. ft.
- 6 inches — 111 sq. ft.

What is Jelly Bean Rubber Mulch made of?
It’s made from scraps and cutoffs generated when manufacturing rubber tile. When a tile is stamped, the excess material is run through a chipper to create the mulch. The material is pre-consumer virgin rubber — latex-free and sterile, unlike rubber tire mulch.
How do we know it’s safe?
Jelly Bean has been third-party ASTM tested for toxicity, including heavy metals, phthalates, and other red-list chemicals. The source tiles are made for use in schools, daycares, hospitals, Head Start programs, and more. The product meets California’s strict indoor air quality guidelines, does not emit harmful VOCs, and is inert — it will not leach.
What color is it?
The product gets its name from the mix of colors it contains. Over 60% of the recycled tiles are in the grey family, so from a distance the material looks similar to gravel on a playground.
A key advantage over tire mulch: Jelly Bean has no coating. Tire mulch coatings eventually wear off and transfer color onto children. Even the best coatings are only warranted for 15 years against total color loss.
Does it meet ADA requirements?
Yes. Jelly Bean Rubber Mulch meets ASTM F1951-99 to satisfy accessibility guidelines.
Does it mold or mildew? What maintenance is required?
No mold or mildew — the source tile has anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties built in, making it ideal for humid climates. The only maintenance needed is occasional raking in high-traffic areas. Jelly Bean tends to stay in place better than tire rubber mulch due to its piece size — it will even hold up to a leaf blower.
What is the lifespan?
Unlike wood mulch, Jelly Bean Rubber Mulch does not degrade or rot. It carries a 20-year warranty against degradation. The higher upfront cost is offset by not needing repeated replacement, and the safety surface stays in compliance over time.
Does it get hot?
Jelly Bean stays cooler than other synthetic surfaces and does not trap heat or experience the rapid temperature ramp-up those surfaces are known for. That said, we recommend a shade structure for playgrounds in high-heat environments, as ambient temperature will eventually raise the temperature of any surface and equipment.
Is it a choking hazard?
The pieces are flat, making choking unlikely — but parental supervision is always required.
