Playgrounds can be more magical and exciting in the winter season. The snow-covered play equipment and frosty play environment create new childhood wintery memories.

However, there are challenges that we need to consider during winter time to keep the play area fun and safe during the colder months.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

SNOW-COVERED PLAY AREA

ICY SURFACE

FRESH AIR

Winter Playground can be magical but requires extra play area care to keep the fun safe even on winter days.

As the winter days approach, it is essential to check the play area to keep playtime safe. Suppose the play equipment is made of wooden materials. Applying a non-toxic wood sealer or preservative is necessary to keep the equipment safe in colder months and help maintain its value.

Proper drainage is essential to ensure no stagnant water on the surface. Ensure there are no clogs to prevent ice build-up on the surfacing, which can lead to hard falls and slippery surfaces.

Regular snow and ice removal with appropriate tools can reduce damage and keep snow play fun. Snow build-up on walkways and ramps must be monitored and removed frequently to ensure clear access to paths and equipment for safer play. Metal, plastic, and wooden playgrounds can be slippery if not attended to and build up icing.

Icing is standard but can be prevented if monitored to keep the play areas and equipment safe during winter days. Use de-icing agents to help reduce the buildup of icing that can cause slips and hard falls to children playing.

Safety surfaces can also be hardened due to the freezing temperature that makes falls dangerous and de-icing agents that are safe for the specific surfacing materials.

It can be too cold to play outside in winter, so appropriate clothing is essential to prevent hypothermia and frostbite. Children should wear boots, coats, earmuffs, and hats to stay comfortable and safe as they play.

Due to the cold, playing time can be shortened, or you may take a break to get warm indoors.

Upon the usual schedule of school playground inspection, in the winter season, inspections must be more frequent; there is more tendency that plastics can be more brittle and create cracks, breakage, and extreme loosing of screws and bolts that are unsafe.

Ladders, slide surfaces, handrails, and platforms must be inspected frequently.

Maintaining the cleanliness of the playground is the key to keeping the play area safe and monitored from unsafe elements that can harm the children.

Due to the cold season, cough and flu illnesses can be present and spread in the playground. Regularly sanitizing the playground can lessen the spread of diseases and help the children stay healthy during flu season.

Children constantly need to be supervised when they go out to play outside, especially in the winter. It is essential to create rules and orient the children to keep them aware of the hazards and ensure safe play in the cold.

Adjust play time to safe temperatures and know the policies and weather conditions to ensure safety. Check the wind chill temperature to see if it is safe to let them play. Generally, it is secure if the wind chill is 32 degrees above freezing. If it is 13 to 31 degrees, indoor breaks to get warm inside must be done every 20-30 minutes. For 13 degrees below freezing, children must stay indoors for frostbite and hypothermia, which can be set quickly.

Children can add a new physical play element by playing with snow, like building snowmen and forts and having snowball fights in designated areas. Sledding is a good activity during winter. These activities promote physical activities and coordination.

Enjoying this seasonal element of play outdoors is essential as children can get a dose of Vitamin D since most of the time, they don’t get outdoors as much as on summer days, so it can be an excellent opportunity to get the dose of vitamins as school playtime.

However, playtime or recess will be shortened due to the cold, so the children can take a break indoors to warm themselves.

Let every child feel the enchanting vibe that a winter playground brings, and do not let the cold stop them. This seasonal feeling will boost their emotions and energy, mesmerizing them as they grow up. Implementing the safety guidelines will help the children and adults embrace this frosty wonderland’s beauty and magical feeling.

inclusive playground

All children have the right to experience fun and excitement and be part of society. The best-designed playground is built and accessible to all abilities so they can equally enjoy and explore the fun space however they want.

What is an Inclusive playground? An inclusive playground is designed to meet the needs of all children regardless of their abilities. It allows all children to experience fun, exploration, learning, and social skills development with their playground friends.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Surfacing is a crucial factor every playground must have following the regulated standard. In an inclusive playground, surfacing must pass the ADA Standard that allows wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility devices to wheel freely throughout the play area safely.

Inclusive safety surfacing includes:

Play equipment must be easily accessible for climbing, swinging, sliding, and other imaginative play. It must also be accessible for wheelchairs and other mobility devices and transfer quickly between play equipment so children can explore freely through the play area.

Inclusive playground equipment includes;

Inclusive Playground embraces different activities that offer unique experiences for children with disabilities, including swings and spinners. It also features play areas stimulating their sensory senses, including musical instruments, panels, water, and sand. These play areas benefit most children with autism and sensory processing disabilities.

Some children need calm zones to be quiet and take a break from active play. This calm zone is essential for children with autism and other developmental disorders who are at high risk of getting overstimulated.

B . STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES

The Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA) was established to create civil rights laws and set guidelines for playgrounds that are accessible and inclusive for children of all abilities, where they can participate and explore inclusively, fairly, and equally.

ADA Requirements for Inclusive Playground include:

An ADA-compliant inclusive playground promotes children of all abilities to be socially connected to society by playing together with empathy and understanding. Inclusive play invites all children and encourages motor skills development, balance, coordination, and problem-solving skills. Letting all the children, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities, with minimal assistance can boost their confidence and self-esteem.

ASTM F1951 is a standard established by the American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) focused on playground accessibility for children with disabilities. The standard ensures the safety of all materials used. The playground must be accessible for all children to navigate with their parents or caregivers using mobility devices like wheelchairs and walkers.

ASTM F1951’s key aspects for inclusive playgrounds are stated as follows;

ASTM plays a vital role in ensuring children’s safety, regardless of the physical abilities that can make them navigate the playground accessible and with complete safety. With inclusivity, it promotes social interaction between children of all abilities and equal access to all play equipment.

Sophie Smith shares the importance of accessible playgrounds and how universal design can benefit all children, making the universal playground design a rule, not an exception.

The first benefit of an inclusive playground is that it lets children of all abilities interact and play with their playground friends, helping them with their social development and self-confidence.

The inclusive play equipment designed for diverse abilities will help children develop balance, coordination, and motor skills. It can also build friendship, understanding, and empathy for all children, with or without disabilities.

Multi-sensory play helps children with disabilities, such as autism or sensory processing disabilities, perform and develop cognitive and motor skills.

Playing is the easiest way for children to relieve stress. An inclusive playground provides a safe, welcoming environment where all children can build self-confidence, self-esteem, and independence.

  1. CONCLUSION

An inclusive playground is essential for children with all abilities to unite. The barriers won’t be present, but the fun and learning experience that playing can bring will be limitless. Every child has the right to feel included in society, and the playground, where children usually spend their best memories and develop, is the best foundation for making them feel they belong and are appreciated.

Communities must embrace the need for playgrounds to be accessible to all. Commitment should be practiced so that playing can be truly for everybody, showing empathy, diversity, and inclusion from the earliest stages of childhood.

Playground design requires good planning and a playground that will match student needs in their learning development, without degrading the fun and excitement of their playtime.

The design focuses primarily on intellectual development, cognitive development, social skills, physical development, emotional skills, language development, sensory development, and environmental and risk awareness.

  1. CONCLUSION

As the community grows and different tastes of adventure, an indoor playground is undoubtedly worth the cost. Peace, comfort, and play are on the other level, increasing demand.

Playing is a wise choice for children who spend their childhood instead of tech-raised children. Choosing a playground destination is one of the exciting parts for the children and the parents, too. Whether indoor or outdoor, the bottom line is the fun, learning, and development it can bring to their childhood.

On the economic side, the opportunity to invest in this industry is the best deal for all business enthusiasts who believe that the quality, fun, safe, and wholesome space will lead to success and capitalize on the growing trend.

Playgrounds must be built with proper structural design and planning to ensure that every child in the community has a great childhood, from the fun exploration experience to the health benefits that playing can give them.

While you let them soar freely in their childhood, safety is also a primary concern, and there are monitoring checklists that you can read, especially when you go to public playgrounds, to keep them away from harm. The same goes for private playgrounds as well.

  1. COMMON PLAYGROUND SAFETY HAZARDS AND PREVENTIONS

When you go to playgrounds, especially public ones, you must understand the common hazards you may encounter. Fortunately, there’s always a way to prevent mishaps and ensure a safe play environment for children to explore.

  1. INADEQUATE SURFACING

https://youtu.be/qzH1GLYZNRo

Surfacing is an essential feature of a playground, designed to protect a child from the dangerous impacts of falling.  Incorrect surfacing material and depth requirements can be hazardous and can cause severe injuries from complex fall accidents; this includes:

PREVENTION

Fall surfacing materials must be appropriately installed and follow the correct depth requirement for safety. This includes;

  1. POORLY MAINTAINED EQUIPMENT

Playground equipment not monitored regularly can lead to incidents and increase the risk of injuries to children, which, even to the smallest detail, can bring harm to them.

  1. Rust, cracks, splinters, worn-out equipment, and loose bolts, screws, and fasteners can lead to cuts and falls.

  2. Peeling paints and coating can get stuck in one’s eye, leading to more injuries.

  3. The poor condition of playground chains and ropes can result in falls and cuts.

  4. Unchecked condition of slides, seesaws, and other playground equipment can lead to injuries, bone fractures, and falls.

PREVENTION

Playgrounds regularly check and maintain every piece of playground equipment, just like how we hold and check the fuel in our cars. A monitoring checklist must be ready to check everything in the area.

  1. INAPPROPRIATE EQUIPMENT DESIGN FOR AGE GROUPS

Children love to explore and challenge themselves to try new adventures that sometimes are not appropriate for their age and not very safe to play on; lack of supervision can lead to the risk of serious injuries.

PREVENTION

Properly separating playgrounds according to age groups is an essential factor, considering each age group’s skills and physical abilities, and it requires proper supervision.

  1. INADEQUATE SUPERVISION

Children may act harshly without proper supervision; misusing equipment can harm them.

PREVENTION

Active supervision is a joint responsibility of the staff and parents or caregivers to ensure children’s safety. Supervision is for the staff who know the equipment better and enforce rules and for the parents or caregivers who guide their children as they play.

  1. ENTRAPMENT HAZARDS

PREVENTION

Proper installation and regular checking of playgrounds can prevent the buildup of entrapment hazards and minimize the risk of injuries with appropriate supervision.

  1. HOT SURFACES AND EQUIPMENT

High temperatures on playgrounds can be a hazard, especially during summer. Children can be exposed to burns due to hot surfaces in playground equipment, dehydration, heat exhaustion, fatigue, and sunburn due to increased sun exposure.

PREVENTION

Playgrounds must have shaded nets for equipment, shaded areas to reduce sun heat exposure that causes injuries, and a water station to encourage hydration.

  1. TRIPPING HAZARDS

Tripping accidents are also a common cause of falls and injuries, and they include;

PREVENTION

Proper surface maintenance, clearing pathways, and checking surfacing can help prevent tripping injuries, and caregivers must encourage children to be more careful.

  1. MOVING EQUIPMENT HAZARDS

Moving equipment can be hazardous if the playground’s structure is not correctly installed, planned, or designed according to standards.

Proper spacing is one thing to consider if the equipment moves because it can accidentally crush or pinch children while playing. Impact injuries can be caused when children run while other children are in swings, zip lines, or rotating equipment. Inappropriate use of moving equipment can cause falling, slipping, or can be thrown off the equipment.

PREVENTION

Install the equipment with the proper spacing and posted safety rules for caregivers. The playground must be planned, designed, and installed correctly to prevent moving-hazard injuries.

  1. KEY PREVENTION MEASURES

  1. Regular inspection and maintenance

  2. Install safe surfacing materials, maintaining an adequate depth to cushion falls.

  3. Maintain proper spacing between play equipment.

  4. Separate play areas according to age-appropriate groups.

  5. Ensure elevated platforms, ramps, stairs, and zipline areas have guardrails to prevent falls and impacts.

  6. Encourage adult supervision and signage that emphasizes adult supervision.

  7. Ensure moving parts have smooth enclosed mechanisms

  8. Check playground temperature, especially metal equipment, and frequent checking, especially during summertime.

  9. Keep the playground accessible from trips by well-maintained- maintained ensuring a clear path.

  10. Design the play areas that are accessible to all abilities.

  1. CONCLUSION

All public playground hazards can be dangerous if not appropriately addressed, but safety measures can lessen the risks of injuries if appropriately implemented. Now that the hazards are identified and prevention is mentioned, communities can create a safe, fun space where children can explore, play, and develop safely with the cooperation of caregivers.

Playtime is crucial to every child’s life, creating experiences that are marked forever. 7. CONCLUSION

A study says that more than 200,000 children get injured that cause by playground equipment, says the United States Consumers Product Safety Commission. General safety is the visible signs that we can check as we step into the area, such as;

Fall Surfacing

According to research, 75% of playground injuries are from falling incidents, so checking the fall materials used in the playground area is essential. Fall surfacing is one of the most critical features of a playground. Common materials used are rubber mulch, woodchips, sand, and poured-in-place rubber, designed to absorb impact and provide a softer landing in case of falling from playground equipment. Proper maintenance can enhance its significance.

Structural

Securely anchored equipment with safe corners and edges and nontoxic playground equipment are essential for a safe play feature. Proper structural design for playground equipment layouts and prioritizing the well-being of the children can reduce the risk of accidents and inspected by the United States Consumers Product Safety Commission.

Regular monitoring and maintenance of the equipment are vital to ensuring the safety of the children as they play. You can proactively prevent potential hazards by diligently checking and providing children with a safe and enjoyable playtime.

  1. Check for any signs of rust, cracks and splinters
  2. Check for the loose parts and tighten the bolts, screws, and fasteners.
  3. Check the condition of chains and ropes.
  4. Check the paint and coating to see if it is still intact and not peeling.
  5. Check the swing seats, chains, and hangers.
  6. Check that the slide surface is smooth without cracks or damage.
  7. Check the seesaw handles and seats are still securely attached.

An inclusive, accessible playground is where all children are welcome and can play, explore, and grow together. The playground must meet the rules of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Well-planned and designed features specializing in physical, sensory, and cognitive needs allow every child of all abilities to participate fully.

Ramps and pathways allow children of all abilities to navigate spaces independently and safely and provide access for children in wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility devices.

Clear signage is a crucial element of an accessible playground. It serves as a visitor’s guide to help them navigate the space effectively and safely. Signages must be placed strategically around the playground, providing vital information such as directions, safety guidelines, and age-appropriate areas.

A clean and regularly maintained playground keeps the space welcoming and enjoyable to all playground visitors. Regular monitoring can prevent hazardous materials, debris, trash, and overgrown vegetation that harm children.

Playgrounds are prone to germs that can quickly spread by touching equipment, so it is essential to implement regular sanitation and maintain the cleanliness of the playground and facilities to prevent illness and keep the playground healthy and safe for everyone.

Trash bins must be available in suitable spaces depending on the playground size to encourage visitors to keep clean. They must also be regularly emptied and correctly closed to protect the space from insects and pests.

Regular landscaping helps eliminate hiding spots and keep pests out. Pest control methods must be environmentally friendly and safe for children. In addition to landscape maintenance, surfaces must be free from dirt and vandals.

Playgrounds must have emergency plans, facilities, and an equally knowledgeable staff regarding safety and emergencies.

In addition, all the essential factors of playgrounds are having facilities that are convenient to all playground visitors, such as;

A shade is installed with equipment to protect the children from the sun while playing. A shaded area with benches allows parents and caregivers to wait and children to rest.

Water fountains should be in the designated areas to keep the playground visitors hydrated throughout the stay.

Playgrounds must have a well-maintained number of comfort rooms depending on the size of the playground and the correct interval between spaces.

Playground Fences to prevent the children from getting out of the area and keep them safely exploring the play inside

Safety is the best thing we can give children, and it’s free. With the features and factors stated above, you now know how to keep play safe and happy for the children and everyone concerned about their safety. A well-experienced, explored, and happy childhood creates a better society today and for future generations.
